Abstract

This pilot survey, concluded in August 2024 by the UIA Architectural Education Commission (EDUCOM), offers a preliminary comparative assessment of architectural education systems across 17 countries within the five UIA regions. Drawing on responses from academic leaders, educators, and practising architects, it examines how schools structure their programmes, prepare graduates for professional practice, integrate contemporary challenges into curricula, and maintain standards through accreditation and validation. Findings reveal striking global disparities in professional registration, for example from 375,084 architects in Japan to 200 in Mali, alongside a clear trend toward standardised programme structures modelled on the 3+2 Bologna framework. Professional practice education and internships have become nearly universal, while sustainability, health, and community development are increasingly embedded in curricula. However, the integration of inclusivity, decolonisation, indigenous knowledge systems, and gender equity remains inconsistent, and access to quality practical training varies evidently across regions. The survey identifies future directions including harmonisation of standards, context-sensitive accreditation frameworks, faculty development, and stronger education–industry partnerships. Establishing the methodological baseline for EDUCOM's subsequent global survey, this study provides an early evidence base for informing curriculum reform, accreditation policy, and international collaboration in architectural education.
